I remember painting and drawing at a very early age and winning a competition
for a drawing of people going to church. This was at Sunday school and my
people were 'matchstick men'. I left school and studied dress and design
at Medway College of Art as it was called then and used to make most of
my clothes. My family thought that dressmaking was a 'more sensible career'
and my earlier years were spent making everyone's clothes. I attended adult
education for life drawing and painting at various times through the years
but leapt forward with my art whilst studying for a part-time degree course
at K.I.A.D. Canterbury.
I experiment with different mediums and the composition dictates the
suitability of the paint. Most small objects are watercolours, larger
pictures are oils, and acrylics are used for both, and for works that
I wish to finish quickly. I am attracted to the effects of nature i.e.
solid objects exposed to the environment over time become colourful and
the rusty effects on the metal have fascinated me as you will see in some
of my work. I live on a boat part of the year and find unusual objects
to paint on construction sites and marinas'. The rest of the year I have
a studio in France where I can work on a much larger scale. My work I
would say is traditional and contemporary mixed together. I paint just
part of an area or this is enlarged to give an abstract appearance. I
hope you enjoy my gallery.
